The 53rd Annual NATO Conference of Commandants was held for the first time in the United States of America in Washington D.C. from May 7th till May 10th, 2024. The conference was hosted by the NATO Defense College (NDC) Rome together with the National Defense University of Washington. Rector of Armed Forces Academy of general Milan Rastislav Stefanik, BG Aurel Sabó, and the director of the rector’s office LTC Martin Chovanec took part at it.
The main idea of the annual conference is a meeting of commanders and representatives of military educational institutions of NATO member countries and NATO partner countries together with international educational institutions such as Baltic Defense College, George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, European Security and Defense College and others. It is a platform, where the representatives of educational institutions can exchange and share experience in the field of military education through panel discussions and managed syndicate discussions.
This year's conference program was connected to the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty, and the individual discussed areas were adapted to this. The topic of the conference was to set up the process of education and training of leaders in NATO, challenges and opportunities for the next 75 years of NATO, impacts on leadership skills in the next 75 years of NATO, or questions of how best to prepare leaders of the strategic level for the next 75 years of NATO.
The main idea of the conference, namely the preparation of leaders for the next 75 years of the alliance, was also supported by the speech of the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Q. Brown.
